How badly do you want long natural hair? I know i do!

Long hair, long hair, long hair... that is every lady's goal for her hair, okay ,may be nor all but majority sha. Grooming your hair to your desired length can be a daunting project, one that has no end.

ANAGEN PHASE
CATAGEN PHASE
TELOGEN PHASE

HAIR LOSS AND THINNING OCCURS WHEN YOUR HAIR GROWTH IS DISRUPTED BY E.G UNHEALTHY ACTIVITIES. THIS CAN BE TRIGGERED BY CONDITIONS SUCH AS METABOLIC IMBALANCES, ILLNESS OR IMPROPER NUTRITION.
FOR INSTANCE, 6 WEEKS AFTER RESTRICTIVE DIETING OR A HIGH FEVER YOU CAN EXPERIENCE TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM (DIFFUSE HAIR FALL). THIS OCCURS WHEN YOUR ANAGEN PHASE IS CUT SHORT AND MANY HAIRS ENTER THE TELOGEN PHASE ALL AT THE SAME TIME. IF YOUR HAIR GROWTH CYCLE IS CONSTANTLY CHALLENGED, OR NOT SUPPORTED, YOU MAY FIND THAT YOUR HAIR WON’T GROW AS LONG AS IT USED TO. THIS IS BECAUSE YOUR HAIRS ARE NEVER ALLOWED TO STAY IN THE ANAGEN (GROWING) PHASE LONG ENOUGH FOR YOUR HAIRS TO REACH THE DESIRED LENGTH. SOURCE.
It’s very important to understand the hair growth cycle in order to recognize and understand many of the problems you can encounter with your hair. The hair growth cycle consists of three distinct stages – anagen, catagen and telogen.
Your hair grows around half an inch a month, and faster in mid year season than in dry season. The growth phase, , lasts an average of 3-5 years.A full-length hair averages 18 to 30 inches. The anagen phase is generally longer in Asians,  and can last as much as 7 years with hair being able to grow to 1 metre,  but as africans, our hair growth rate is relatively slow due to the texture and nature of our hair.
At the end of the anagen phase, your hair enters the catagen phase. A short transitional phase that lasts approximately 10 days.
Lastly, your hair enters the telogen phase, a resting phase when your hair is released and falls out. At this point ,not significant growth occurs , the your hair growth appears stunted. The follicle then remains inactive for 3 months and the whole process from anagen phase is repeated. Each hair follicle is independent and goes through the growth cycle at different times, otherwise all your hair would fall out at once, hence that explains why some parts of your hair grows faster than the other .

For natural hair growth, we need a lot of patience ...................trust me i know! *wink*

My hair butters and me

Every naturalister I know thinks that Shea butter is the holy grail of natural hair. It seems to be the all-in- all of natural hair. Yes it is actually very good for natural hair but there are suitable conditions under which  it should be applied. Have you ever applied Shea butter on your hair and it stays just on top? never absorbs ! Yes I have and I vowed never to apply it to my hair again. Most times it melts and drips down my hair like annointing lolllllll......na wa . Just like most of you out there, I didn't know any better, i thought daily moisturizing with Shea butter was the answer to my brittle and frizzy hair but  sometimes it gave my hair even more frizz when applied to dry .....

Shea butter is heavy and not ideal as an everyday pomade or hair cream. Here are some tips on how to use Shea butter and other hair butters......

Benefits of steaming your hair

Steaming is a process that every "naturalista" should include in their hair routine. It means adding moisture in the form of moist heat (steam) to the hair strands. This can be done different ways .You can use  a handheld hair steamer or a standing steamer.
Why should i steam?1. Helps reduce breakage: the steam  adds moisture to the hair  and thus can make dry, brittle and thirsty hair supple and hydrated.
2. Lifts the cuticle to allow product/ingredient absorption: the heat from the steam raises the hair cuticles, which makes products absorb easily into the hair. This is particularly helpful for low porosity hair because it raises the cuticles for better absorption of products.
3. Enables hair stretching, less shrinkage and tangles: When the hair is properly hydrated, the level of shrinkage reduced.
4. Helps clean the scalp and promote hair growth: the warmth from the steam fights  through some product build-up/dirt on the scalp, making it easier to keep your scalp clean. A clean scalp is a healthy scalp which means  healthy growth. The warmth also helps stimulate blood flow in the scalp which again helps with hair growth.

How often should you steam?

This depends on how dry your hair feels, how often you need to wash your hair and how difficult/easy it is for products such as deep conditioners, leave-in conditioners etc. to penetrate your hair strands. You can steam 1-2 times weekly, it totally depends on how your hair feels.I steam every weekend and this has made my hair more elastic and hydrated.
