My hair butters and me

Every naturalister I know thinks that Shea butter is the holy grail of natural hair. It seems to be the all-in- all of natural hair. Yes it is actually very good for natural hair but there are suitable conditions under which  it should be applied. Have you ever applied Shea butter on your hair and it stays just on top? never absorbs ! Yes I have and I vowed never to apply it to my hair again. Most times it melts and drips down my hair like annointing lolllllll......na wa . Just like most of you out there, I didn't know any better, i thought daily moisturizing with Shea butter was the answer to my brittle and frizzy hair but  sometimes it gave my hair even more frizz when applied to dry .....

Shea butter is heavy and not ideal as an everyday pomade or hair cream. Here are some tips on how to use Shea butter and other hair butters......

the perfect bantu knot with water!

Bantu knot is something that has always caught my fancy. It is simple to do and the results are absolutely amazing. Have you ever wondered why your bantu knot never dries out well especially for a 4c hair type? This is because you use to many products to twist and knot. Refer to the previous post on how to know your hair type...

http://naturalfinegeh.blogspot.com/2016/01/how-to-know-your-natural-hair-type.html

Owing to the thickness and density of 4c hair, you do not need too many products to set your bantu knot,  just WATER! I struggled with this for years until I finally tried just water and a sealant ...........result was excellent.

THE PERFECT BANTU KNOT

  1. Wash hair and air dry .
  2. Whilst hair is still damp, partition in small sections.
  3. Apply a sealant to sectioned hair and do a tight two way twist. You can use raw African shea butter as sealanr (ori).
  4. wrap twist several times round until it form a knot.
  5. Tie hair with a silk/satin scarf before going to bed.
  6. Before you undo twist in the morning, rub bantu knot with a light weight oil eg coconut /argan oil.
  7. Undo twists gently........
  8. Simple right......

Are you tired of boring up dos......?

So since the upsurge of natural hair in Nigeria, all i see is up dos, more up dos and a lot more updos! Boringggggg seriously i see little or no creativity when it comes to styling natural hair. Nigerian women often encounter many surprises and troubles with their natural hair. It’s either difficult to style or lacks length for versatile impressive hairstyles .The other problem is when your hair is getting too dry and brittle as a result of experiments with styling products.

Meanwhile the other mystery that emerges is how to style your short natural hair so that it looks decent. No worries my friends 😅😉 there are many fantastic stylish hair styles for your short hair, mid length and long hair. Here are some pictures  of some classy ones.

Your Options In Natural Hairstyles

- Protective updos. They protect the delicate structure of your hair from the elements and loss of moisture.
- Twists. Number one hair do for nigerian women lol. I see this hair style in different shapes and forms everywhere I turn. It looks fancy whether you wear them loose or in elegant updos.
Enough talk enjoy😄😄😄

How jamaican black castor oil can GROW your hair! WORD!

About two years ago my hair line started receding . I stopped braiding my hair just to gain my beautiful hairline back *for where*. I heard about Jamaican black castor oil and gave it a try , the rest they say is history... This oil worked wonders on my hair line and improved my hair growth and shine. I know a lot of naturalisters suffer from receding hair lines (I see quite a lot )as a result of tightly held braids or weaves.

How Jamaican black castor oil can help your hair!
Jamaican black castor oil

Jamaican Black Castor Oil works for all hair types.

· It will moisturize
· thicken
· strengthen
· and rapidly increase hair growth
Jamaican Black Castor Oil also prevents hair breakages, dandruff, eczema and dry, itchy scalp(I can testify to this .I used to have serious itchy scalp problems but all that is history now thanks to JBCO).  It can also be used to grow eyelash and eyebrow hair and as massage oil. This versatile oil carries many varied uses.

Is there a specific hair type that will benefit the most?

Jamaican Black Castor Oil works for all hair types and textures. A healthy scalp means healthy hair. It works for all hair types because the oil works on the hair roots/follicles and not the hair itself.
How is JBCO different from ordinary castor oil?

Jamaican Black Castor oil is more effective than the clear pharmacy castor oil because of the ash content due to roasting of the beans. Therefore, it is believed that the more ash content, the more effective the oil. This is not a myth, it is has been proven  based on scientific facts.

Use JBCO for Hair Growth & Moisture

1.      APPLY small amounts of Jamaican Black Castor Oil (also available in Lavender and Extra Dark .Click link to get JBCO.) daily to your hair roots and scalp. Then massage the oil into your scalp using your fingertips. You may leave the oil on your scalp overnight. It is easily absorbed and will not stain your pillow.

2.    Use Jamaican Black Castor oil as a hot oil treatment, preferably on weekends. Massage it into your scalp and hair.

3      Apply JBCO to your scalp and hair, cover your hair with a plastic cap and go under the dryer for 15 to 30 minutes.

You should begin to see results in two weeks after original date of usage.

For Eyelash & Eyebrow Growth

Jamaican Black Castor Oil will help your eyelashes and eyebrows to grow thicker and longer, and keep them from breaking.  Massaging a little over the base of your eyelashes before bed prevents thinning and promotes rapid growth.

How to apply JBCO to lashes

1.      cleanse  your face with a mild soap and remove all traces of makeup from your eyelashes and eyebrows .

2.     DIP a mascara wand or a cotton swab into Jamaican Black Castor Oil. It is important to only apply a thin layer,  use a clean tissue to dab away excess from the wand or Qtip if necessary.

3      apply the oil evenly through your eyebrows from inner to outer tip. Then use the wand/cotton swab to apply the oil to your eyelashes, just as you would mascara, from root to tip.

4      LEAVE the oil on overnight and rinse off in the morning with a mild soap before you apply your makeup/ moisturizer.

Hair growth is such a big issue , but this treatment may have captured it in a bottle!

MAXIMUM HYDRATION METHOD ! yayaaa! you can now "wash and go with ease"

I tried this method for four consecutive weeks and the result was mind blowing! My curls were more defined, less tight and my hair felt softer...

I always used to wonder why my hair didn't like "wash and go", it never came out right.... either too dry or shrunk. I first read about The Maximum Hydration Method last year on an article online.
You may think you are moisturizing your hair enough, but if you’re using lots of sulfates, “cones” (products that have ingredients ending in -cone) or not applying water-based moisturizers enough, your hair could be thirsty.

Your hair shrinks up more when there' s not enough moisture in it, so when your hair is fully hydrated, the opposite happens.
You’ll also have stronger hair, fewer tangles and your natural pattern will come out.

5 Steps to Max Hydration

step 1 : CLARIFY YOUR HAIR WITH APPLE CIDER VINEGAR OR BAKING SODA
Popularly known as ACV(click here to buy online) This removes product residue from the hair . Be careful with the baking sodas it has relaxing effect ,only a small amount will suffice.

step 2: DEEP CONDITON YOUR HAIR WITH A DEEP CONDITIONER
Now , this is where the actual work begins. As you apply the deep conditioner , ensure to detangle gentle and get the product into every strand! yes every strand......I always part my hair into four places and apply product one piece at a time " I call it the divide and conquer method heheh". Your deep conditioner should be water based so look closely before you buy one. The recommended ones are by kinky curly(follow link to buy online).
I actually mix mine using avocado, shea butter egg and coconut oil.(Video on how to make your own deep conditioner coming soon).Cover your hair with a plastic cap and sit for 30mins or more if you can .

Note: there are several Nigerian organic products you can patronise.

step 3: APPLY BENTONITE CLAY
Mix one cup of Bentonite Clay powder (click link to buy online ) and 2-3 cups of warm water or aloe vera juice. Coat the entire hair in bentonite and detangle strand by strand . This is a very crucial so take your time td detangle .
(Feel free to add a tablespoon of honey and olive oil for extra moisture.)  The consistency should be slightly thinner than yogurt. Add more clay or water/aloe vera juice as needed.(I actually cover my hair in a plastic cap and sit for about 30 more mins before rinsing out the bentonite clay, I love cooling effect of the clay......this is just my personal added routine o!).

step 4: APPLY A SILICON FREE LEAVE IN CONDITIONER
While your hair is soaking wet (and I do mean dripping wet), apply a silicon-free conditioner one section at a time.

step 5 : APPLY A SILICON BASED GEL
Immediately apply a botanical gel on soaking wet hair.  I tried forever living gel and it was good , you could try it too. Do NOT use gel with protein like Eco Styler. It should be a botanical gel. You can also use flaxseed gel. A good recommendation is kinky curly botanical gel.

The wetter your hair is when applying, the better the product will dissolve and not leave that residue.
I would NOT recommend waiting until you are out of the shower.  Apply the gel IMMEDIATELY.

For best results ,you’re really supposed to do this for 7 days in a row the very first time you do it
The idea is to get your hair to its maximum hydration level.
After it reaches that, you can do it every few days.

DID YOU KNOW? Natural hair tip...

00:07:00 0

How to know your natural hair type. Learn how to keep it moisturized! *wink*

Trust me, I just to knew mine only last year , so do not feel bad if you have not figured yours out yet. Knowing your hair type will help a great deal on how you manage your hair.

What’s Your Hair Type?

find out now!

The best way to  know your original curl pattern is after you have washed your hair and it has aired without any products in it.

The classification system ranges from straight hair types to curly hair types. Curly hair types include:  3a, 3b, 3c,  4a, 4b, and 4c

Most Nigerian/African hair textures fall within the 4b and 4c range, yes the comb breakers and  tear initiators loll. Maintaining these textures can be frustrating .The one thing you need to know about natural hair is that the kinkier (tightly coiled) it is, the drier and harder it will be in most case.
When your hair is very kinky, it’s harder for your scalp’s natural oils to travel down your strands.  hence the reason for dullness.
That is why some people who have looser/straighter curl patterns have shinier hair.
Your pattern can also explain why your hair has a very low sheen and no shine. Shine comes from light reflection. That’s why relaxed hair appears shinier. Straight hair reflects the light better.
Natural hair shines when its healthy.

You cannot change your hairs texture . However, with proper TLC you can still bring out your strand’s natural sheen and revitalize your tresses

HOW TO KEEP YOUR HAIR MOISTURISED AND SHINY

I get really confused when I see naturalisters pour all sorts of oils on their hair just to moisturize it. Firstly "oils are not moisturizers", water is the most reliable and best moisturizer there is.....

  1. Drink lot of water. To keep your hair moisturized, drink at least 8 glasses of water daily.
  2. Buy water based moisturizers and good sealants. Sealants contain oil and/or butters that seal in water (moisture), eg "ori"  So if you twist your hair while it’s damp (water is your moisturizer) and apply a good sealant, that will keep your hair moisturized and soft for a long time.
  3. Try the MAXIMUM HYDRATION METHOD . This method is everything! I tried it on my hair and trust me , I saw results almost immediately! My hair was fully hydrated . Here is how to know when it is fully hydrated...
    1. Your hair will retain moisture very well (less product to achieve optimal moisture level)
    2. You’ll have less shrinkage
    3. Your curl pattern will pop with less frizz
    4. Your hair will be stronger (less breakage)
    5. There will be fewer tangles
    6. Do the baggy method..... This is another fantastic way to retain moisture.

my hair is way too tough to manage HELP!!!

Is this you? No shame in admitting because this used to be me , yep. I cried for months from combing my hair, combs broke in my hair, I tried everything and almost gave up! One merry day I discovered the secret to softer and more manageable hair! Are you interested? Read on.......

HOW TO MAKE YOUR NATURAL HAIR SOFTER

source The natural haven
  1. Always have your hair in a protective style before going to bed or else your hair will be stiff and shrink beyond recognition in the morning . You can do  two way twist or three way braid(calabar).
  2. Deep condition more often. Constant deep conditioning makes the hair softer and loosens up the coils.
  3. Always apply a leave in conditioner . Leave in conditioners makes your hair soft instantly! Yes it works like magic...so you should invest in a very good leave in conditioner. Ensure to buy water based leave in conditioners, this keeps the hair hydrated.
  4. Apply shea butter, popularly known as "ori"...I use this mostly when I am braiding my hair, my stylist applies it to my hair before cutting it in portions to braid. Combing my hair without shea butter brings me to tears no jokes...
African shea butter

Really being natural is not as difficult as people make it seem. Anything you are ignorant about will always be difficult . Take it one day at a time ...

So you decided to go natural

I started my natural hair blog today yayyy! I know there are tons and tons of natural hair blogs out there but hey the sky is big enough for everyone right? LOL. I have been natural for three years plus now and trust me it wasn't all fun and games , I have had my fair share of frustration . My hair has passed through the fire and flame but alas! we came out victorious......

I will be sharing my natural hair care struggles and tips on this blog bi monthly and I hope my experience helps someone .... Being natural in Nigeria is quite a chore , it could be frustrating at times . Because our weather is so harsh we need to take extra care .
The big chop, Yikes!
I remember when I did my big chop, I was as confused as hell , I tried a whole lot of things which ended up destroying my hair. Here are a few steps to guide you after your big chop

                                                     LIFE AFTER THE BIG CHOP

Truth is most people do not know what to do after their big chop, here are a few guides:

  1. Relax. Be anxious for nothing my friend.
  2. Deep condition as often as you can. You have the luxury to deep condition often because of the length of your hair.
  3. Embrace and love your length.
  4. Wash and go is your friend ! Yep ! wash and go when your hair is short is the easiest thing, honestly I miss my short hair sometimes. All you need to do is wash and rub your hair with some curly pudding .
  5. Moisturize with a good moisturizer.
  6. Know your hair type.
  7. Expecting more? Nah....its not that serious ...
  8. Enjoy!
Watch this video to get some tips on your must have items ! So there you have it, I know this is a new experience and if you have never been patient with anything *clears throat* BRACE YOURSELF....
