YOU DON'T NEED TO BREAK THE BANK TO BE NATURAL

People always ask me how much I spend on my natural hair and my answers always remain the same " NEXT TO NOTHING" yes ! , that wasn't a typo....

I have been natural for four years and all through I watched my hair evolve, I tried all sorts on it and today   I am glad I took those risks. During my tee nee wee nee hair days, I would spend roughly , twenty thousand naira buying the same products in different brands loll.......... Chai! "Dem chop my money Sha".... I used almost everything in the market  , I know some of you can relate.

My big break came when I discovered my natural remedies and voila my hair became a wonder!๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Ž.

KNOW YOUR HAIR TYPE (NO BE JOKE O!)

I cannot over emphasize this enough. What works for hair A may not work for hair B. For some people honey makes their hair crunchy for others No. Read about hair types here.

DO NOT BE ADDICTED TO YOUTUBE VIDEOS ON NATURAL HAIR

I love YouTube! As a matter of fact I learn a while lot from it, but I discovered that the hair types are different from ours here in Nigeria. A 4c hair in the US is different from a 4c hair in Nigeria and the reason for this is not far fetched. "WEATHER" . Their weather is not as harsh as ours and this leads to dryness ,in fact over dryness.  Have you ever watched a video on twist outs? Their  curls are more defined and shiny . My hair is one of the most healthy I have seen but my twist outs do not appear as perfect as the ones on YouTube. This made me somewhat dissatisfied, I thought I was doing something wrong , until I had to face the harsh reality " our weather conditions are different๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜•๐Ÿ˜–". Here's what you can do to keep your hair hydrated :

  1. Drink lots of water
  2. Steam at least once a week to retain moisture . Read more about steaming here .
  3. Maximum hydration . Read more here .
  4. Do the baggy method . Read more here .
List of natural hair masks you can make from your kitchen :
  1. Avocado hair mask for growth , strength and volume .
  2. Banana hair mask for shiny hair
  3. Honey and olive oil hair mask for strength etc
These are the ones I have tried and worked for me. I am still using them till date ...

DO NOT BE CARRIED WAY BY LENGTH

I have seen so many long and unhealthy natural hair. Some people are more concerned about their length than the actual well-being of their hair. Do not get me wrong , length is very good as a matter of fact it is an evidence that your hair is healthy but in some cases , your hair may be lengthy yet weak and dry. On the other hand , your hair may not be as long as you would expect yet it has some body and shine. There was a time when my hair was long but I knew there was something wrong , it felt dry and flaky , looked dull and thirsty. When I focused more  on the well-being of my hair than length alone, the length came naturally . I was no longer bothered about how long my hair was rather more focused on having healthy tresses .

I am pretty sure you can notice my highlight๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜‰, I shall talk more on the topic in my next post.... Xoxo

You can have a health natural hair with products made from your kitchen.....๐Ÿ˜Ž

My weekend hair routine

I am really excited to share my weekend hair routine yayyy! SO basically, I have some specific treatments I carry out every weekend and would love to share with you all....

Step 1: I clarify my hair with baking soda or apple cider vinegar. Read more about apple cider vinegar here...

Step 2:  I pre-poo my hair with coconut oil and honey. This is basically adding any carrier oil of your choice eg coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil etc before shampooing. This helps to reduce the harshness of the shampoo on your hair.

Step 3:, I CO-WASH my hair twice  a month so you can replace co-washing with shampooing , it all depends on what works for your hair. This has worked perfectly for me over time. This is basically washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo...

Step 4:, I mix my avocado hair mask and apply it to my hair while I de-tangle. Read more about DIY avocado hair mask...

Avocado hair mask
Clay rinse
chunky twist
twist out

Step 5: After rinsing the hair mask, I oil rinse ...... Read more about oil rinsing here... You really need to try out this oil rinsing , my hair is soooooo soft and slippery , "I kent believe it"

Note : sometimes I do a simple clay rinse to further define my curls and detangle my hair. This is optional. I do this step during my maximum hydration treatment. Read more about maximum hygration here....

Step 6: Finally, I style my hair into chunky twists.........

There you have it, so simple and cheap.

Try and develop a routine for your hair. My own routine may or may not work for you but it is ok to try it out. More so, knowing your hair type and hair porosity will go a long way in helping you .....

Beer Rinse : The solution to limp natural hair(Get that volume)

beer rinse for hair
Beer is one of the oldest fermented beverages known to mankind. Beer is an alcoholic drink produced by the fermentation of sugar produced as a result of saccharification of starch. Malted cereals like barley and wheat are the common sources of starch for brewing beer. Beer contains 4 to 6% alcohol and is the third most consumed drink in the world following water and tea. Apart from being an enjoyable beverage, beer is also a popular hair care product, providing numerous benefits to hair and skin.

Compared with other carbonated drinks, beer has excellent benefits for your skin. So, beer not only boosts the hair volume, it also penetrates deep and nourishes the scalp from inside. When hair is soaked, rinsed, or sprayed with beer, its natural ingredients coat each strand, making them healthy. Along with vitamin B, the proteins found in malt and hops (which are active ingredients of beer) are said to repair damaged hair. The sucrose and maltose sugars present in beer, tightens and strengthens hair cuticles for enhanced shine. The popular beverage is known to even help in controlling dry scalp along with improving the lustre and quality of hair.

There are a lot of  rinses known to help achieve healthier and stronger hair, but if  you’ve got fragile curls and scanty hair  you may want to try out a good bear rinse .This may sound gross because of the smell however, the benefits of a beer rinse for naturally curly hair makes a lot of sense . My hair is pretty full and thick so I may not need to try this out. Here's a picture of my hair.

What's in it?

The key ingredients in typical beer are yeast, barley, water, and hops. Hops contains essential oils  that are rich in antioxidants which can fortify and strengthen the hair.
Did you know that bear also contains vitamins B and proteins which are great for conditioning. It also contains maltose and sucrose sugars which help to swell and tighten the cuticle , adding body and shine. From what I hear(I have not actually tried this)  beer rinse is also  improves elasticity and helps to revive the hair after heat damage. So, if your hair feels like " fawol" feathers , you need to try this out and share your results with pictures . You can send your pictures to itohaneregie@gmail.com.

What you'll need

All you need is one bottle of lukewarm, flat, non-alcoholic beer. Only use alcoholic beer if your hair is very oily , alcohol absorbs the natural hair oils. If your hair is oily, the alcohol will not have a damaging effect.  Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you might need two bottles.

Directions

  1. Co-wash your hair with a good conditioner .
  2. Pour the beer all over your  hair, coating every strand from the root to the ends. Alternatively, you can adapt the divide and conquer shampoo technique.
  3. Let it sit for about 3 to 5 minutes and rinse it out with warm water .Rinse again with cool water to help get rid of the smell.
    1. If you are worried about smelling like "beer parlor loll", add a bit of conditioner after the beer rinse. This step is actually optional .
      1. Rinse the conditioner out with cold water to lock in the moisture , pat dry with an old t-shirt avoid shedding . You are good to go! Style your hair .........

I will absolutely try this rinse , your fro can never  be too big right ? *wink*
      Your Royalnappiness!

Have you ever used beer in your hair? What did it do for your hair?

How onions can help your hair growth...*wink*

I am as shocked as you are believe me. Onions ke? Wonders shall never cease "nothing we no go see for natural hair" . Did you know that One loses at least 50 to 100 strands of hair on a daily basis? Don't worry it is perfectly normal as per dermatologists. However, when this exceeds, it leads to hair thinning or balding patches, known as alopecia Popularly known as " gorimapa". People in their 30s are prone to suffer from hair loss problems due to hormonal changes, stress and often an unhealthy diet.God help us because the stress in Lagos  alone can make you bald.

Onion is a rich source of sulphur, which is extremely beneficial for healthy hair growth. It prevents hair breakage and accelerates regrowth of hair. This is so because sulphur increases the production of collagen which helps the hair to grow.
Benefits of onion for hair loss problems
      • Onion helps provide proper nourishment to the hair follicles and pumps in the lost nutrients.
      • Massaging some raw onions onto the scalp helps increase blood circulation, thereby strengthening the hair follicles.
      • Due to the presence of sulphur in onions, hair thinning and breakage can be reduced.
      • Onions also have anti-bacterial properties which are useful in getting rid of scalp infections and parasites.
      • Premature greying of hair is caused as the the natural antioxidant, catalase reduces. Onion helps control this problem by increasing catalase.
